Brain Function. I’m A slave to feeling good.

I’m constantly trying to find ways to keep my brain functioning at the optimum level. Whether it’s by sleep, hydrating, eating or listening to some music, I find that I am a slave to feeling good. I mean who wants to feel bad anyways? This is where we find food to be highly addictive. A trick in thinking you feel good. SUGAR & BREAD.

Sugar and bread make me feel uncomfortable in my own skin and throws me out of wack for hours at a time. However, knowing this I usually pick up another snack.

Got to kick the habit

Eventually, I will hit a wall and say, no ‘I can’t do this tomorrow.’ Then, FAST the following day. Fasting is the willing abstinence or reduction from some or all food, drink, or both, for a period of time. An absolute fast or dry fast is normally defined as abstinence from all food and liquid for a defined period.  That will stop me in my tracks. Usually I will be hungry day dreaming about what I can’t have, but If I make it through the day, that’s a win. The following days will get easier and then BOOM my mind is up and running at full capacity. The body feels lean and mean. It’s hard though. Personally for me, this is a cycle that usually happens mid summer and right now…. THE WINTER! Darker earlier, a chill in the air. I see myself eating a bit too much and the holidays don’t help one bit. Does this happen to you? It should. Just like squirrels gather nuts or bears hibernating, us humans pack on weight so that we have sufficient calories to make it through the winter.

The problem lies with our bodies being naturally programmed for calorie storage due to many days if not weeks of food sparsity.

Today, there is a fast food store, deli or hot dog stand on every corner. That is where we run into a problem. FOOD IS EVERYWHERE when our bodies are still programmed to think we won’t be getting food for awhile.

See, even though I run a gym, give advice and guide people to their goals… I have the same temptations. I have found a trick that has steered me away from these foods. So go on… read more.

  1. Sugar activates the brain the same way cocaine does. Addiction…That can’t be good.
  2. Flour (bread pasta etc) leads to heart disease! Once tribal communities came into contact with flour, heart disease sky rocketed! Anyone interested in those readings contact me and I will forward some stuff to you!
  3. Reduction of fish in the diet. Fishing communities have a far less percentage of heart disease than inland communities.
  4. Anything packaged. Here are Critical Mass, FRESH IS BESHT (best). Packaged foods are loaded with preservatives, dyes, sugar, sodium etc.
  5. Chemical sugar replacements. I have trouble with this one. I go through phases. Here is an early post on aspartame that may help keep you in the clear. ASPARTAME

Who wants to live their life in a hospital?

Why would anyone NOT want to be at their highest healthiest functioning level?!?!

This brings me to a list of goodies to help keep your body and brain functioning in tip top shape.

Live Cultures or Fermented food/drinks

Yogurt or anything else that has probiotics. Gut bacteria has been shown to have effects on the mind. Yes, our stomach controls our thoughts! In a study published in the scientific journal Brain, Behavior, and Immunity, researchers found that participants who took a probiotics over four weeks had fewer negative thoughts than those who took a placebo. This could be a preventative strategy against depression. I prefer natural, fresh alive foods that contain probiotics rather than a pill. So, try pickles, coleslaw, kefir, raw milk, etc

Mushrooms are a good source of dietary fiber, protein and complex carbohydrates, they are high in copper, phosphorus, vitamins D, B2 and B3, and contain high amounts of selenium, an antioxidant that helps protect cells against damage. Scientists are looking into mushrooms for their anti-dementia properties and the potential to speed up recovery of nerve cells by stimulating growth and repair of the cell; specifically with the “Lion’s Mane” mushroom and mushrooms containing psilocybin. You  can get pills or powders of the mushroom at local nutrition stores or online,  but it’s always best to consume it fresh! As for psilocybin…. you will have to do your own research. The New England Journal of Medicine says “eat your chocolate”. There are several studies demonstrated evidence of improved brain blood flow, oxygen levels, or nerve function by consuming dark chocolate/cocoa. Dark chocolate contains high amounts of flavanols which are considered to have an anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects. You know you smile when you see that chocolate bar. Don’t get carried away. a small square of chocolate should be enough to put a bit more pep in your step.


Nuts have a significantly high concentration of DHA, a type of Omega-3 fatty acid and is especially prevalent in walnuts.  DHA has been shown to protect brain health in newborns, improve cognitive performance in adults, and prevent age-related cognitive decline.

Of course this is not the only way to keep your brain healthy. Seeds, broccoli, berries and oily fish are some other things that have been shown to benefit the mind. Don’t take my word for it. Do a little research and start incorporating these small changes into your daily food intake! Oh and don’t forget to exercise!

28 Day FASTING Challenge

One of the worst ways of dieting is one that burns both muscle and fat. If you really want to transform your body then the goal should be to sustain/build muscle and burn fat. Starving yourself doesn’t cut it. There is no reason to put in all this work to look like a smaller version of your fatter self! That’s where Critical Mass’ 28 Day FAST comes in. In the past we have followed a well balanced diet, but this time around we are working with INTERMITTENT FASTING. Don’t know what INTERMITTENT FASTING is?  It’s restricting your food consumption to a certain time frame within the day.  It’s been found to have some interesting results.

  • Human growth hormone (HGH): Increased levels of Growth Hormone will increase during a fast. Growth hormone is a hormone that can aid fat loss and muscle gain. Basically, HGH was responsible for your growth as a baby to an adult. Source
  • Insulin: Insulin increases when we eat. When we fast, insulin decreases dramatically. Lower levels of insulin facilitate fat burning. Source
  • Norepinephrine (noradrenaline): Norepinephrine is sent into the fat cells, making them break down body fat into usable free fatty acids that can be burned for energy. Source


There are a few ways to apply the INTERMITTENT FASTING in order to become successful. I myself FAST once every three days and I’m down around 45lbs. My partner Adam almost lives a full FASTING life! I don’t think you can pinch any fat on his body! There are many ways to approach this and be successful. Flu Season is here!

Well it’s that time of the year, Flu season! The CDC has issued a warning that there are different strains of flu around the country. This means combating them will be very difficult.  The flu shot which is tweaked every year to meet the structure of the virus will only work in roughly 30% of the population who get the shot.

If you find that you are starting to get sick, don’t take any chances. See a doctor as soon as you feel any symptoms.


  • feverhills
  • cough
  • sore throat
  • runny nose
  • muscle or body aches
  • headache and fatigue

It’s pretty common sense on how to prevent germs from slipping into your body, but if they do, outside of seeing the doctor, here are some steps you can take to help lessen the impact and shorten the life of the flu.

  • Hydrate. You’re not going feel like drinking anything, let alone have the energy to. You must force yourself to sip on water continuously! Don’t fall into a state of dehydration! It will only make the symptoms worse and even deadly! Plus, the hydrated body will help move waste, virus etc quicker.
  • Eat. You will not want to eat anything, but you have to! Soups, shakes (non dairy) will help give you the calories your body needs to function the best it can when fighting off the flu!
  • Nasal Remedies. Saline solutions whether that be spray or the Neti-Pot can help flush the nasal passages for better breathing and influences the sinuses to keep moving product to lessen congestion.

Keep your hands clean and keep away from those who are sick!

That Crock-Pot Life

For some reason the crock-pot is constantly on and filled with food.  It’s the winter’s ritual of having hearty foods to consume. From stews, to chilies, to shredded chicken dishes to soups, there is always something brewing in the crock-pot.

Everyone has the excuse,

“I have no time to cook!”

With a crock-pot everyone has time! All you have to do is throw a bunch of food in and set it on low/medium heat over night and BOOM… you have 3-5 days of meals! It seriously only takes 5 minutes of your time to prep. I really don’t think there is anything more time efficient than the crock-pot!

So, get your crock-pots cooking some muscle building fat burning foods! Start prepping your meals! Stop impulsively eating! LETS DO THIS! #CROCKPOTLIFE

Plastics this Holiday? I don’t mean to scare you but…


Plastics always gave me the chills. I can remember one Holiday dinner my mother microwaved some food with Saran Plastic-wrap. I freaked out saying “you can’t microwave that!” She assured me that it was ‘microwaveable safe’.   I CALL BULLSHIT! A thin piece of plastic being blasted with heat. That can’t be good!

There is a large amount of research pointing out the facts that plastics, or specifically BPA’s (gifts, receipts, toys, storage containers etc) have a direct effect on male a female fertility. There can even be DNA damage, impaired cognitive development, it promotes allergic activity in children and…

that stubborn fat you been trying to lose could be linked to your BPA intake!

Tips for reducing your exposure to plastics:

  • Avoid canned foods, The linings typically contain BPA. So that tuna fish you were eating that you thought was so healthy… isn’t so healthy!
  • Use glass/ceramic for drinking any liquid.
  • Instead of plastic water bottles, use stainless steel or glass. If you use plastic, keep them cool. Increased temperatures can break down the weak carbon bonds and leak them into your beverage!
  • Receipts contain BPA’s. Toss them out. Don’t distract your kids with them when shopping!
  • Every wonder why some toys are so cheap? Well, those plastics contain BPA’s or alternatives to BPA’s even if labeled ‘BPA free’. Instead, go for wood toys! Bring it back old school!
  • Never heat food in plastic containers or use Saran Wrap!
  • Use parchment paper or beeswax fabric.
  • Cosmetics and personal care products, and avoid those that contain phthalates (plastic chemical) in the ingredients list.
  • When storing food use glass!
  • Heated car seats should be avoided, especially if pregnant! The weak carbon bonds that make up the foam within the seats breakdown and seep into the body.
